Stain Glass Sugar Cookies
Use your favorite sugar cookie recipe. Cut out the cookies with a large cookie
cutter. Use a spatula to transfer the shapes to the baking sheet. Remove the
centers of the cookies with a smaller cookie cutter. Place 2 Jolly Ranchers (I
like using 2 different colors) in the center of each heart (or whatever shape
you made) and bake according to your recipe's instructions. Let the cookies
cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to
cool completely. To prevent sticking, place waxed paper between layers of
cookies.

I've been making cookies like these for several years (usually as Christmas lights, attached w/string licorice), and everyone always raves about how yummy they taste! I wouldn't be afraid to make them based on one person saying she didn't like them.
What alternative might you use for the candy? I don't think i can get "Jolly Ranchers" -whatever they may be- in Europe

Jolly Ranchers are a clear sugar candy (fruit flavored). I would think you could substitute different candies of the same type.
Another possibility may be to make your own sugar glass...
dear fellow Europeans jolly ranchers are simply a soft, clear hard-candy, (like lollipops are made of) You can experiment with any hard candy. I suspect that jolly ranchers melt at a pretty low temperature since they are softer than the old fashioned candies I grew up eating in Denmark. Good luck.
The taste will be affected by the sugar cookie recipe you use. Many recipes call for different flavorings from vanilla to almond or lemon. That will affect the taste when added to the Jolly Ranchers flavors.
Can use life savers instead of the Jolly Ranchers!
I tried making these at Christmas. They were a major pinterest fail! I used my favorite sugar cookie recipe, but the raised too much and the middle filled in and the were just one big blob. Could you please share your sugar cookie recipe? Would love to try these again as I think they are beautiful and my husband said they still tasted good.

Made those but the cut out heart inside didnt keep the shape. Any idea how i can make same as on the picture?
My sugar cookie recipe gets puffy...but I have a soft cut out recipe I use that isn't sweet and keeps perfect shape. I think it would be great.
I love these, reminds me of the ones I made as a child with lifesavers hard candies! I like the 2 tones, and of course, the pink. I'll have to find some cool colored ones in my candy aisle. I can't believe someone said they didn't like them... afterall it's your own recipe. I wish I had my sis's recipe. I bought her a birthday card that had a sugar cookie recipe and we've been making cookies since we were 8 and 9! Beautiful and creative cookies! Love them.

I made them and I couldn't get the wax paper off the jolly rancher part after it cooled a little bit. But I was able to just bake it directly on the cookie sheet and they didn't stick too bad there. My kids loved them.. I used jolly ranchers and dum-dum lolly pops..
If you put your cut out cookies in the freezer for 10-15 minutes prior to baking the cookies will retain their shape. I have a question for anyone willing to answer, will the candy stick to the baking sheet? Did you spray with a cooking spray prior to baking. Thanks
Any suggestions on how to keep the melted jolly rancher from sticking to the cookie sheet? Our cookies looked great until we tried to transfer them to the wire racks. Then we could not salvage any of them because the centers were literally glued to the sheet. Thanks!
I am going to make these this week for the kids classrooms, I am curious to know if anyone answered the questions regarding sticking to the cookie sheet? I was going to use the pillsbury pre-made sugar cookie dough. Anyone else try this?

I used Pillsbury premade cookie dough with parchment paper lined backs (on round 2, pictured in my previous post)
Any hard candy will work. I made these when I was a kid with sour balls, after obtaining the recipe for stained glass cookies from the kids tv show, "ZOOM".

These are great cookies and years ago they were called Cathedral cookies and we made them for Christmas. You need to use hard candy, for example the Jolly Ranchers that were posted, or you can use life saver candy, hard peppermints, butterscotch discs, crush up hard suckers. But I would not recommend using soft candy like gummy bears,etc. Thanks for the new look on an old favorite. the Hearts are beautiful with the colors you use. Thumbs up.

use a silicone baking sheet. I make macaroons which are very sticky and no matter how long I wait they slide right off.
